Lung Illness

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

There are a lot of people who end up with one of the most dangerous illnesses in the world: lung cancer. In the US, the disease was the leading cause of cancer death in the last few years. This is in large part due to the smoking that was prevalent in previous decades. This is considered one of the top causes of the disease. It isn’t untreatable, however. It often depends on the stage the cancer is in when it’s discovered. A person might have to have surgery or undergo radiation or chemotherapy for a period of time. The doctors themselves decide all that, because they know the person’s exact situation at that time. But along the way, they might need to have some kind of respiratory aid. The cancer can make regular breathing very difficult, so it might be necessary for the person to have some kind of rebreathing machine or other breathing aid as time goes on. Ask your doctor if you have this illness.

Basic Fan

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

If you think that your respiratory problems might be the result of some kind of outgassing or fumes in your house or apartment, don’t worry. There are many ways to fix this problem, generally. One of the easiest and most common ways to take care of it is to put in a fan. A completely normal fan. Some people have a ceiling fan, others use a box or desk fan to take care of the air in the room. This will move air around or even send it out of the room, out the window, and make it less dangerous to breathe. It’s always helpful to have this kind of machine in place when you’re there, because you never know when you might get some kind of allergen or a new thing from the store might smell really bad while it loses the smell of its manufacturing. For some people this can be a very annoying and painful thing to have around, so a fan is especially helpful for them.

Breathing Muscle

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

The most important breathing muscle, as you likely know, is the diaphragm. Some people think that they have a breathing disorder or some kind of illness, but in fact their diaphragm muscle is simply too tense or not strong enough. One is always surprised when one does some specifically breathing-directed exercises how much easier breathing is. When I was in school, I tried a simple exercise: I put a large book over my diaphragm or stomache and breathed in and out a few times. The next few days, I was able to support my singing breath much better than I ever had before. Not every breathing problem can be solved this way, of course, and if you suspect you have such an illness, you should make sure to check with a medical professional. But in general, such an exercise isn’t going to hurt you and it might well make things more comfortable overall.

Background Info

Along with using certain kinds of breathing apparatus to help improve one’s breathing comfort and ability, we should first step back and check in with what kind of breathing is most comfortable and efficient in the first place. For example, is it more efficient to breathe through the nose or through the mouth? Is it better to alternate? There are lots of possibilities for questions on this topic. It can be very useful to come up with answers to this, especially if you are researching into different kinds of medical solutions to certain problems. For example, some people simply have trouble getting the proper amount of air. If they find out that it is more efficient to breathe this way or that way, it might become a much more comfortable activity and they might be able to get the kind of respiratory therapy that they need. Read over the entire abstract and let me know what you think about breathing efficiency.

The Future

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

A pollen study was recently released about the future of respiratory illness. There is a big chance that people will start feeling really bad over the next few decades. Why? The climate change, whatever its cause, will probably change the plants around us, possibly making them product more pollen, and overall making them secrete even more. Keep in mind, many people have allergies from plants and it’s kind of unfortunate that they aren’t able to get past that in a lot of cases. While the allergies aren’t often life-threatening, they can be annoying and big challenge for people who are suffering acutely from them. For example, it’s hard to get work done when you are always sneezing, for example. Obviously, you can take care of that in various ways, with varying degrees of effectiveness. But you are going to feel kind of bad for awhile, it would seem. If this report is right, then the next half century could be challenging for you!

Nebulizers Vs Inhalers

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

There are lots of ways of taking medication. There are chewable vitamins. Many pills can be taken with water or another drink. It’s very easy for a person to take medication that can go into the blood through the stomach. But what about those medicines that you have to get into your lungs. Many of the people who read this blog are people suffering from respiratory illness and need to have medicine put into the lungs. Obviously, you can’t inhale a pill and then your lungs wouldn’t be able to break it down. But the lungs are good at dealing with liquids and gasses. This is why they have inhalers and nebulizers. An inhaler is, in many ways, just a nebulizer for someone that only needs a little bit of medication to treat their condition. The nebulizer takes care of the people who need a larger amount of medicine. It is often powered with electricity or batteries as it needs to deliver a much larger volume than most other products.

Life Long Care

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

One of the most common respiratory illnesses is asthma. I’ve been thinking a lot about it ever since I wrote a couple entries about it a month or two ago. Today I decided to look up some information about it. It turns out that it’s impossible to cure asthma and no one grows out of it. Just because you have asthma doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re unable to breathe and it’s not necessarily something that’s dangerous immediately. But taking care of it with inhalers and other treatment can help both the momentary symptoms as well as the long term condition of the disease. If you had asthma when you were a kid, you still have it in some way. There are different kinds of asthma, some of which come up in certain situations, like with pollen or particulates. Or in athletic kinds of situations. Others are simply there and can act up at any moment. That’s why you have to keep it in mind as part of your daily life and make sure that you take care of it everyday.

Airplane Security and Your CPAP

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

Talking about Homeland Security the other day made me think about if you have a CPAP machine and what you should then do with it when you are travelling. Obviously, on a train, it’s not going to be a problem, though you might not find a place to plug it in if you have to. If you go on a plane, you’re going to find the same problem, especially on overnight flights. When you go through airport security, the machine has the same rules attached to it that your laptop does. You will want to take it out of your bag and its bag and put it on the conveyor belt individually in order to get through without any trouble. Then you will want to pack it up quickly, as you put on your shoes and all that kind of stuff, as soon as you go through the metal detector, etc. It’s complicated, but if you know all that going in, you will have a much easier time getting through it.

In An Emergency

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

With the US Homeland Security administration, you can find out lots of helpful information. During an emergency, accident, or disaster, there can be lots of contaminants and particles released into the air. If you are in the midst of it, you will probably want to have a something to cover your mouth and nose with. Certain kinds of cloth can block particulates from entering your system. It is similar to the way a gas mask might operate, by catching the bad stuff and only allowing relatively pure air to come in. In other situations, it might be good to put up a barrier on the windows to keep the bad air out. For example if you’re in your house and then something’s going on outside, you can put up the barrier in the form of plastic. Garbage bags are often used this way, in simulations. There are, of course, more thorough and reliable methods of blocking out dangerous air that you can buy, but these are some of the methods you might use in a bind!
